Mariam-uz-Zamani Palace in Fatehpur Sikri

Fatehpur Sikri, once the capital of Mughals, is now a popular destination with tourists and archaeologists having a keen interest in the beautiful history of the country. One of the most prominent and notable monuments to include in your itinerary while visiting Uttar Pradesh is Fatehpur Sikri’s Mariam-uz-Zamani’s Palace.

Also known as Jodha Bai’s Palace, this architectural heritage has a history behind it. It was built to pay homage to the memory of the great Sufi saint, Sheikh Salim Chishti, who was known to bless the empire with an authoritative emperor, Jahangir. This monument has been recently acknowledged as one of the most prominent World Heritage Monuments by UNESCO.

Jodha Bai Palace Fatehpur Sikri

The citadel of Jodha Bai, the Rajput wife of Mughal ruler Akbar, is an appealing historical site to visit beacuse of the perfect mix of Rajput and Mughal architectural styles. You can see the whole fortress built with a blend of both the styles providing it the charm and elegance for which it is famous. This magnificent palace is located on the eastern side of the fort and was used as the residence of Akbar’s queens and other members of harem.

This palace is built on an open and large forum with many apartments inside the palace linked with courtyards having square pillars curvilinear in shape. Added to the Hindu-styled architecture with charming red stones are the turquoise bricks used to build the rooftops of the palace. This palace for Jodha Bai, the principal queen of Akbar, was constructed in rectangular shape with dimensions of 231’8”x215’ in area. It has a huge single gate with guardrooms. The interiors are carved with a lot of Hindu motifs like elephants, swans, srivatsa mark, parrots, ghant mala, lotuses, etc.

The elegant look of beautiful brackets and moldings and the vedikas and Hindu motifs comprises the various suites. The main portion of the palace has eight pillars with chhatris and chhaparkhats. The domes are semi-circular in shape and also has khaprel made triangular roofs. The great history, exceptional interiors and a perfect blend of Hindu and Mughal architectural style has made Mariam-uz-Zamani's Palace a must visit in your tour to Fatehpur Sikri.
